A completed download alone should never be the acceptance test.

This is a commissioning question for founders and teams building custom electronics, connected devices and industrial products. Decide what the delivered unit must prove, which evidence the supplier will hand over and who will maintain the update process after the prototype leaves the bench.

Write the update requirement before choosing the delivery method

Start with the installed product. Can a technician reach its service connector? Can it stop operating for an update? Does it need an internet connection to recover? Who can authorize a release, and who can trigger its installation? These answers affect the implementation and the support commitment, whether updates arrive over a network or through a local tool.

For sites in Lebanon, the Gulf or elsewhere in MENA, document the actual connection, power arrangements, maintenance windows and service access. A regional label is not a specification. A laboratory unit beside its developer and an enclosed device at a customer site have different recovery constraints.

NIST’s federal IoT profile describes software-update capabilities including restricting changes to authorized entities and checking update sources. It is a useful requirements reference, not a claim that a product is certified or that a particular implementation is secure. NIST software-update capability reference.

Separate delivery, validation and acceptance

Use distinct states in the device and its management interface. “Downloaded” means the transfer finished. “Validated” means the specified checks passed. “Running for evaluation” means the candidate has started but still owes evidence. “Accepted” means the product’s agreed acceptance conditions were satisfied and recorded.

Define what each label requires. A validly signed image can still contain a functional defect or target the wrong product configuration if compatibility controls are inadequate. Ask for explicit checks covering the intended hardware, dependencies and configuration format, alongside the mechanism that verifies the image’s authorized origin.

MCUboot provides one concrete example of separating trial execution from permanent acceptance. Its documented test-swap flow boots a candidate image and allows the application to mark it acceptable. If it is not confirmed, the next boot can revert to the previous image. The behavior depends on the selected update strategy and configuration; it is not a guarantee shared by every bootloader or device. MCUboot boot swap types.

Our recommended acceptance milestone is therefore a product behavior, not a library name: demonstrate that an unconfirmed candidate follows the agreed recovery path, then demonstrate that a confirmed candidate remains accepted through the specified restart tests.

Conceptual firmware acceptance flow. A candidate becomes accepted only after the agreed checks pass; otherwise the product follows its documented recovery route. This is an illustrative requirement, not a product implementation diagram.

Make recovery compatible with stored data

Reverting executable code does not, by itself, establish that the previous release can understand data written by the candidate. Treat configuration, calibration, queued records and database formats as part of the update contract.

Ask the team to name the supported starting versions and any required migration steps. If the new release changes a stored format, decide when the conversion happens, whether the old release can still read it, and what recovery does if conversion is interrupted. Avoid a promise such as “we can always roll back” unless the tested combinations support it.

Keep authorized recovery separate from unrestricted downgrading. The permitted recovery release must satisfy the product’s security policy as well as its operational needs. If an old release is no longer permitted, define another service route rather than silently relaxing the policy.

إنّ قائمة التحقق من واجهة العتاد والبرمجيات الثابتة explains how to record version compatibility across components. For update acceptance, extend that record to include the bootloader, active application, candidate image and stored-data format.

A hypothetical acceptance test

Consider a low-voltage monitoring device with a local status indicator, stored sensor settings and a remote dashboard. This is a hypothetical product, not a MakersGround deployment. The agreed update policy allows a candidate to run temporarily; permanent acceptance requires valid settings, a successful local measurement check and a recorded result. A lost dashboard connection is handled separately from a failed local check.

The following checklist is a starting point for that example. A real product needs its own test conditions and risk assessment. Qualified personnel should perform interruption and fault tests in an approved setup, with existing safeguards intact.

Wrong target: offer an image intended for another supported hardware variant. Record the rejection and verify that the accepted application remains usable.

Untrusted or damaged package: use a controlled negative test artifact. Record which validation failed and show that installation did not proceed.

Interrupted transfer: interrupt the delivery path. Verify the specified retry or abandonment behavior without falsely reporting an accepted update.

Candidate fails its local check: exercise the documented recovery route and record the release and settings active afterward.

Candidate passes: retain the evidence that allowed confirmation, then verify the accepted release after the required restart sequence.

Dashboard loses contact: distinguish a last reported state from the current state. Reconcile using fresh device evidence when communication returns.

Choose interruption points from the actual implementation, including image writing, activation and data migration where applicable. The separate power-failure recovery checklist covers the broader reset and storage questions. Here, the acceptance record must identify which update transition was being exercised.

Test a release on a bounded group before widening it

Fleet deployment needs its own decision process. Identify a small, representative first group, the observation period, evidence required to expand and the conditions that stop further distribution. “Representative” should cover relevant hardware revisions and configurations, not simply whichever devices happen to be online.

AWS IoT Jobs is an example of a service that exposes rollout rates and abort criteria, with separate execution timeout and retry settings. These controls illustrate fleet-level operations; they do not replace the firmware’s local validation and recovery design. AWS IoT job configurations.

Distinguish stopping distribution from recovering units that already installed the candidate. A dashboard action labelled “cancel” is not sufficient evidence that every device returned to the earlier release. The runbook should tell the operator how to identify pending, updated, failed and unreachable units, and what happens to each group next.

What should the handover contain

Ask for a short release record that can be tied to one physical unit and one installation attempt. At minimum, retain the unit and hardware identifiers, previous and candidate release identifiers, artifact identity, relevant configuration format, attempt time, transition results and final observed state. Record the test conditions and who accepted the result.

The handover should also explain who can approve releases, where the supported artifacts and recovery instructions are maintained, how update access is controlled and who responds when a unit cannot recover remotely. Do not place secret signing material in an ordinary support document. Responsibility for preserving access and supporting the product should be explicit.

Before accepting a delivery, ask the team to walk through one failed attempt and one successful attempt using those records. If the only evidence is a progress bar reaching 100 percent, the product’s update behavior has not yet been demonstrated.

How this connects to MakersGround’s engineering scope

Our published Gomicron engineering record documents work across mechanical design, PCB electronics, firmware and control, slicing software, prototyping and manufacturing. That integrated scope is why update requirements need to account for the physical unit as well as its software.

The project record does not establish that Gomicron used MCUboot, AWS IoT Jobs or the update process described here. Those are cited technical examples and general recommendations. For a new custom product, agree the supported update and recovery behaviors in its own scope, then make their demonstration part of acceptance.

المصادر

Primary technical sources and the project record were checked on 13 October 2026. Documentation describes the referenced mechanisms, not the results of a MakersGround deployment. Confirm the exact versions and configuration used by the product being commissioned.

NIST federal IoT
